Best Reads of the Year (So Far)

I’ve been reflecting on what I’ve read so far this year, and I’ve been making reviews for the advanced copies and did the Mid-Year Book Tag for YouTube, but I wanted to spend a little more time talking about my favourite reads of the year so far and collect those thoughts in one place. I did a video version of this last year for what I believed to be the best books of the year (so far), but since then I’ve accepted that some of the books I love to read may not necessarily be the best of books. This list will be in no particular order, just vaguely chronological, so let’s begin!

The Kings of Nowhere is the currently Patreon exclusive sequel to The Boy Who Steals Houses by C.G. Drews, an author and a book that own my entire heart. They stole it, if you must.

This book was as close as you can get to unputdownable for a book that was published a few chapters at a time each Friday. It takes place soon after the events of The Boy Who Steals Houses and is dual narrated by Avery Lou and Jeremy De Lainey, showing Avery’s transition from a life of burglary and car theft to a life of homey chaos in the butter-yellow house. However, he feels like he’s drowning without Sam and is determined to sabotage his time with his new family and get locked up with his brother instead.

The Boy Who Steals Houses by C.G. Drews [REVIEW]

I’m going to start off with saying that I’m a bit sad NetGalley rejected my request, but my book arrived the day before publishing day so I have a beautiful physical copy to hold and cherish.

This is the second novel of C.G. Drews, who has a blog called Paper Fury that I’m obsessed with, and I’ve been dying to read another book from her ever since I finished ‘A Thousand Perfect Notes’. I read this book in one sitting – only a few hours – and it’s one of few unputdownable books I’ve read this year.

A little about the book: Sam and his autistic older brother, Avery, have been abandoned by every relative they’ve ever known, and Sam’s trying to build a new life for them. Sam breaks into empty houses until one day he’s caught when a family returns home – a large, chaotic family that instantly accepts him – each teenager assuming he’s the friend of another sibling.

A Thousand Perfect Notes by C.G. Drews [Review]

I’m going to start off with saying that I’m sad that I don’t have a physical copy of the book to hold and cherish (it looks beautiful, and if you have two copies, the front and back covers make a butterfly), but I did get to read an ARC from NetGalley a few months ahead of the book’s release, in exchange for an honest review. Shoutout to NetGalley.

So, this is the debut novel of C.G. Drews, who has a blog called Paper Fury. If you’ve seen a few of my posts or any of my YouTube videos, you will know that I’m obsessed with her, and I’ve been dying for the chance to read her book. I read this book in one sitting – only a few hours. It’s the most unputdownable book I’ve read this year, full of thrills and feels, and this beautiful musical heart that mine is breaking for.
